Fraction of the Globe in Drought: 1982-2012

The graph above shows the proportion of the planet in drought, by intensity, 1982-2012. The graph comes from a paper in a new Nature publication called Scientific Data and is open access. You can see it here.

  1. The graph definitely suggests El Nino causes drought.

Otherwise, a slight but definite downtrend.

  2. Maybe if Dems hold another all night climate séance they can convince the public that a carbon tax will end all the drought seen in this graph. ;-)

  4. On the drought fraction, this pettern is largely what would be expected during a period of global humidity increase consecutive with rapid polar ice collapse with huge outflows of cold air masses. Also influencing this is the variation in warming of the two hemispheres due to their land mass and CO2 release differences.
