At the
NYT FiveThirtyEight blog Nate Silver uses our normalized loss database (above) and historical loss of life data to assess the relative intensity of (mostly) print media coverage of Hurricane Irene. He finds that the coverage was in line with that of other storms since 1980. I would love to see a similar analysis exclusively focused on television news coverage -- I'd hypothesize different results.
